Measuring Advice for Window Blinds
Before you purchase a blind, it is crucial that you measure the window space it will be covering. Measuring for a new blind is easier than you might think. You just need to follow a few simple steps and gather some tools to get the correct measurements.
When your new blind is delivered, instructions on how to fit your blind can be found on our installation guides page.

Equipment
- You will need a good steel metric tape measure (if you need to convert feet and inches to metric, use our converter when you select a blind).
- Some paper and a sharp pencil.
Decide if you are fitting the blind to the inside or the outside of the window recess and follow the instructions below:
Considerations
- Always measure the window in three different places for width/drop.
- Make sure there are no obstructions that would hinder the operation and position of your blind.
- Make allowances for cupboards, phone sockets, dado rail, tiles, handles, tilt and turn windows, skirting etc.
- If you are fixing multiple Blinds side by side ensure you leave a minimum of 1cm gap between each blind, to ensure they work independently of each other and fit within the space you have.
- Please note if ordering Wooden Venetian Blinds and your order is for the Blinds to be made exact, then the blind headrail will be provided with wooden returns to go with the top wood cover valance; this is an optional extra that hides the Blind headrail and the ends, it is your choice if you use them or not.

You would only use the returns if the blinds were to sit outside the recess free of window returns, and obstructions.
The Blind itself will not change in size, only the wood valance.
If you decide not to use the returns then simply cut the valance square to the width of your head rail with a small tenon saw.
Inside mount (recess)
Measure the width across the recess in three places β top, middle and bottom. Make a note of the smallest measurement for your order.- Measure the drop in three places β left, middle and right. Make a note of the smallest measurement for your order.
- Remember to allow for any obstructions.
- Please note that you will lose a small amount of fabric from each end of a roller blind β 1cm off the pin end and 2.5cm off the controller end, to allow for operation.
- When you enter your measurements on your order, mark them as recess and we will make the necessary deductions for your blind to fit in the recess. Please note the deduction is 1cm.
Outside mount (exact)
Measure the exact width and height you want for your blind and make a note of your measurements.- Allow a minimum of 4cm above your window for brackets, so add 4cm to your total drop to allow for a fixing above your window see diagram.
- Add a minimum of 4cm to the sides of your window for additional privacy and to block more light. Be aware of any obstructions, such as doors opening onto the wall next to the blind.
- Enter exact on your order and we will manufacture the blind to your precise measurements.
Blinds in a conservatory
(face fix order as recess)
Decide where you want to fix your blind we would advise directly under the facia plate just below the roof line generally 10-12cm below where the roof meets the sides.
We do not advise fitting directly on to the facia plate as it is not always a straight forward procedure as the aluminium under the PVC cover plate is often corrugated.
Measure to the window sill. For doors measure to the floor allowing for a mat if you have one and order all blinds as recess.
Please ensure if your conservatory is shaped that you make allowances for over laps in corners, or if you have angled sides that deductions are made for the angles to give the correct fit.
